Notes by Prof. Salviati: This ornament is carved in openwork in the shape of a dragon with a compressed s-shaped body whose head is turned towards the wide, curled tail. Further curls emerge from the body of the dragon which is embellished with spirals carved with thin incised lines in low relief. The jade is translucent and pale yellow, with earth encrustations, especially along the sides of the hollowed-out areas: when the light filters through the jade, the dust within the engraved lines highlights the delicately incised patterns, making them appear as if they are almost painted on the surface (see photos with details of the jade). Stylistically, the jade can be compared to a carving representing a winged dragon in the Harvard Art Museums collection, acc. no.1943.50.344: http://www.harvardartmuseums.org/collections/object/205050?position=0 A somewhat comparable carving, but later in date, has been brought to light in 1991 from a Han tomb at Sanjiaowei, Tianchang city, Anhui province: it is reproduced in Yangzhou Museum, Han Guangling guo yuqi (Jade Wares of Guangling, Han Dynasty), Wenwu Chubanshe, Beijing 2003, p.77. The excavated jade is shaped as a dragon with a compressed, s-shaped body decorated with incised scrolls and volutes: the head has feline features and the tail is cut as in the present example.
