AN UPPER ROBE WITH 'SHOU' MEDALLIONS FOR A LADY - China, Guangxu period - Black silk satin in twill weave, additional pattern weft: gold thread, double. Sleeve bands. Yellow silk satin, additional pattern weft: silk. Edge borders, embroidered with silk, satin stitch, woven border. Central closure with brass spherical buttons. Lining: silk, light blue. The robe is decorated with large woven Shou medallions in gold. Likewise, the yellow sleeve bands are decorated with woven patterns, namely large peonies and butterflies on a yellow background. Here and along the hems and side slits, as well as around the neckline, narrow borders of black satin embroidered with flowers are appliquéd. The shou medallions of this outer robe refer to birthday celebrations. However, robes with the so-called "Hundred Shou" (bai-shou-yi) were made for funerals and carefully kept until then. - German private collection, acquired before 2007 - Minor damaged due to age, little stained

Schwarzer Seidensatin in Köperbindung, zusätzlicher Musterschuss: Goldfaden, doppelt. Ärmelborten. Gelber Seidensatin, zusätzlicher Musterschuss: Seide. Randborten, bestickt mit Seide, Plattstich, gewebte Borte. Zentraler Verschluss mit Messing-Kugelknöpfen. Futter: Seide, Hellbbau. Das Gewand ist geschmückt mit großen goldenen Shou-Medaillons, die in den Grundstoff eingewebt sind. Ebenso sind die gelben Ärmelbänder mit gewebten Mustern verziert, nämlich mit großen Päonien und Schmetterlingen auf gelbem Fond. Hier und entlang der Säume und seitlichen Schlitze, wie auch um den Halsausschnitt sind schmaler, mit Blüten bestickte Borten aus schwarzem Satin appliziert. Bei diesem Obergewand verweisen die Shou-Zeichen auf eine Geburtstagsfeier. Allerdings wurden auch Roben mit den sog. „Hundert Shou“ (bai-shou-yi) für die Beerdigung gefertigt und bis dahin sorgfältig aufbewahrt.
