A MONUMENTAL MARBLE GROUP OF 'GALATEA', P. PASQUINI AFTER LEOPOLDO ANSIGLIONI (1832-1894), DATED 1924

Brilliantly carved in celebration of Leopoldo Ansiglioni’s (1832-1894) original figure, the present marble was executed by the prolific Pasquini sculpture workshop, active from 1860 to 1991 in Pietrasanta, Italy. Internationally-known both for the quality of their output and the longevity of the workshop, this exuberant marble is an exceptional homage to the original first executed in 1882 for National Art Exhibition in Rome.
Depicting a sea nymph triumphantly riding a dolphin, this sculpture is faithful to its model - the position of her body and her flowing hair give the same impression of grace and dynamism. Prior to Pasquini’s rendition, Ansiglioni executed at least three documented examples of Galatea, each raised on an elaborate bronze-mounted plinth. The first commission is believed to have been ordered in 1879 for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) for Hearst Castle, San Simeon in California. The work was described by Hearst himself in a 1889 letter to his mother Phoebe Apperson Hearst (1842-1919) as "one of the finest modern marbles”. A second and third example are presently installed in The Winter Garden at Avery Hill, Etham, United Kingdom; and Chimei Museum, Taiwan. A further example appears to have been conceived for interior decoration of 29 Chesham Place, London, for Sir Sydney Hedley Waterlow, whose documentation survives in preparatory watercolours for the residence.

The enduring popularity of the model and adoration for Ansiglioni’s masterpiece continued into the early 20th century with another example, very likely produced by any number of the renowned Florentine studios, such as Galleria Lapini or Galleria Frilli, which was exhibited at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, United States.
