Further details
PAUL-CÉSAR HELLEU, ALICE HELLEU AND HER SON JEAN ON THE YACHT ÉTOILE, RED, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, PASTEL
This pastel by Paul-César Helleu illustrates two of the artist's favourite themes: his family, to satisfy his passion for painted, drawn and engraved portraits, and his love of sailing and yachting. Here he depicts his wife Alice Helleu, recognisable by her red hair, warmly holding her youngest son Jean. Sheltered under an umbrella, they are both reclining on a rattan chair, a recurring object that often appears in Helleu's work, as for example in this three-pencil drawing of two women sitting and talking, dated 1910 (fig. 1 ; Christie’s sale, London, 1er May 2000, lot 87 ; F. De Watrigant, Paul-César Helleu, Paris, 2014, p. 230, ill).
His passion for the sea and sailing is also evident in his work. Helleu owned several yachts during his lifetime. He spent a long time by the sea in Normandy, staying with his family-in-law in Bénerville-sur-mer and with his friend Jacques-Émile Blanche near Dieppe.
