Lot 5 | PAIR OF earrings SARMATIAN GOLD decorated WITH LIONS HEADS AND COLOURED GLASS, IN IMITATION OF GARNET st century ap. J.-C.
Gross weight : 7,3 gr.

5 cm.

Each earring consists of a circle of the son

twisted ends with a lion's head. The mane

is decorated with filigree and enamels, of which we see the trace. The

head holds a circular frame adorned with a large cabochon

glass paste which imitates the garnet. One can notice the

decor beaded and the fine tracery of the four sons of gold.

The use of colored glass is typical of the jewels of the North

of the Black sea. Similar patterns have been discovered

at the end of the 1800s during the excavations of Sevastopol (1).
