A good copy of this account of travels conducted throughout the Russian Empire (the first in 1769-1774, the second in 1793-1794) by the German naturalist Peter Pallas, professor of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences and friend of Tsarina Catherine II. The atlas, in addition to the large folding map of the Russian Empire, illustrates the customs and natural specimens collected by the scientist during his exploratory journeys. 8 volumes, 8vo (200 x 130mm) and a volume of plates in 4to (320 x 245mm). 108 plates of which many folding (some browning and spotting to text leaves). Contemporary calf, title on spine label, covers within gilt border, marbled edges and endpapers, edges of plate volume coloured (light rubbing)
