Further details

PARIS BORDONE (1500-1570 / 1571), A CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL IN A LANDSCAPE, OIL ON CANVAS, A FRAGMENT, UNFRAMED

The style of Paris Bordone (1500-1570/1571) shows a deep debt to that of his master Titian (c. 1488-1576), with whom he began an apprenticeship in 1516. Bordone's vibrant palette is reminiscent of that of the undisputed maestro of the Venetian Republic, and this led to commissions beyond the borders of the Serenissima, both at the court of Fontainebleau and for the Fugger family in Augsburg, though sadly none of these works survive.

Captured in rapid brushstrokes against a verdant landscape, this little spaniel charms with its expressiveness. These small animals often punctuate the corners of large Venetian compositions, the discreet companions at the feet of goddesses or languid women, a practice promoted in particular by Titian. His two large scenes from the life of Diana, formerly in the Duke of Sutherland's collection (National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh) use this canine motif as a counterpoint, accentuating the impressive scale of the figures. Curled up in a ball in the foreground or stretched out in a lower corner of the canvas, these dogs add an amusing dose of the everyday to such mythical scenes.

This small canvas, a fragment, can be understood as having originally been part of one of these mythological compositions, probably depicting Venus lying in a landscape. The large Venus given to Bordone's studio in the Berlin Museum (A. Donati, Paris Bordone. Catalogo ragionato, Soncino, 2014, no. 143) shows a small, dishevelled dog in the same type of composition, at the foot of the goddess lying on a landscape background. King Charles-type spaniels are frequently represented in Titian's work, we also know of at least one other of this breed in Bordone's work, held in the arms of a woman, who holds in her left hand the same type of collar with bells (see A. Donati, 2014, op cit., no. 198).

We would like to thank Dr. Andrea Donati for confirming the attribution of this painting to the artist on the basis of a photographic examination of the work.
