PEDLEY, Thomas Franklin (1850-1922)
‘Midwifery among the Burmese.’ Offprint from: Transactions of the Obstetrical Society of London. Vol. XXIX. London: 1887.
Very rare offprint on Burmese midwifery, complete with the original watercolours which were never published. The journal article was not illustrated, but the final page of text refers to the present illustrations which were available for reference in the Society’s library. The author states: ‘I have obtained a few drawings from two Burmese artists illustrative of the methods pursued by their midwives. They were executed by them without prompting or suggestion on my part, and they did not profess to have any special knowledge of the subject, but gave what had probably been described to them by midwives, and what had come under their own notice’ (p.19). The offprint has a separately printed title-page and is repaginated from the journal, where it runs pp. 5-23, with pp.24-26 giving statements, comments and questions raised after Dr Pedley’s paper.

Pedley was a British medical officer who served as the Health Officer of the Rangoon Municipality, Medical Officer at the Dufferin Maternity Hospital. He received his medical training at Guy's Hospital and qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (M.R.C.S.) in 1876. Besides his medical work, he held the military rank of Lieutenant-Colonel with the Rangoon Volunteer Artillery, for which he received the Kaisar-i-Hind medal in 1915 in recognition of his contributions to medicine and public service in India.
