PESSOA, Fernando (1888-1935)
Antinous: A Poem. Lisbon: Monteiro & Co., 1918
Rare presentation copy of Pessoa’s first published work, inscribed by the author: ‘For Mr W. A. Bentley with the authors compliments’. William Bentley was a reader in Portuguese at King’s College, London and had been editor of the British journal Portugal. A Monthly review of the Country, its colonies, commerce History, Literature and Art in 1915.

Pessoa was a highly influential Portuguese poet and literary critic. Born in Lisbon, he spent part of his childhood in South Africa before returning to his hometown, where he lived until his death in 1935. He was a prolific writer, producing works under his own name and around 75 ‘heteronyms’—distinct literary personas with their own styles and philosophies. Antinous explores the tragic romance between Roman Emperor Hadrian and his beloved Antinous, who died young. A symbol of male homosexuality in Western culture, Antinous figured in works by Oscar Wilde including ‘The Young King’, The Sphinx, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. ‘In tone and treatment of its subject Pessoa’s Antinous is Romantic or post-Romantic, Late Victorian, Aesthetic, fin-de-siècle, though it is dated 1915, first self-published in 1918, and reworked for the 1921 edition: squarely within the formative years of English Modernism’ (Reed). Joseph Reed, ‘Pessoa’s Antinous’, Pessoa Plural—A journal of Fernando Pessoa studies, Issue 10 (2016).

Octavo (200 x 130mm). (Some light spotting.) Modern full red morocco gilt by Trevor Lloyd, original wrappers bound in place (minor stains to wrappers); matching red morocco case gilt. Provenance: William Bentley (scholar of Portuguese and journal editior; authorial presentation inscription on half title dated 1 August 1918’ – Joaquim Pessoa (bookplate) – unidentified bookplate inside rear cover.
