Post lot text

PIETRO BERRETTINI, CALLED PIETRO DA CORTONA, A DRAPED WOMAN PRESENTING A LAUREL WEATH TO A PUTTO, A TEMPLE BEYOND, TRACES OF RED CHALK, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, GREY WASH, INSCRIBED OVAL

This drawing is a first idea for one of the illustrations included in the second edition of Girolamo Teti’s Aedes Barberinae ad Quirinalem, published in Rome in 1647. The Aedes Barberinae, first published in 1642, was intended as a volume celebrating the Barberini palace in Rome and the family’s magnificent collections of paintings, sculptures, and books. After sketching this first idea, Pietro da Cortona created a more finished preparatory drawing now at the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica, Rome, inv. FC 124318 (Disegni di Pietro da Cortona e Ciro Ferri, exhib. cat., Rome, Villa Farnesina, 1977, no. 14, ill.), which was then translated into an engraving by Cornelis Bloemaert II (fig. 1).
Fig. 1. Cornelis Bloemaert II, after Pietro da Cortona, Angel bestowing a laurel wreath on a putto holding a book, Girolamo Teti, Aedes Barberinae, Rome, 1647, p. 301, pl. 35.
