Lot 116 | PIETRO PAOLO AGABITI (SASSOFERRATO 1470-1540 CUPRAMONTANA)
Post lot text PIETRO PAOLO AGABITI, THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT SEBASTIAN, TEMPERA AND OIL ON PANELWith its carefully constructed landscape scattered with Roman ruins, its figures with rounded faces, and its vivid colouring, this predella panel bears witness to the Venetian apprenticeship of the young Pietro Paolo Agabiti (1470-1540) - probably in the workshop of Cima of Conegliano (circa 1459-circa 1517). Although no archival evidence remains, Cima’s influence is palpable in works such as our Saint Sebastian, the Virgin and Child on a Throne between Saint Peter and Saint Sebastian, signed and dated 1497 (Padua, Municipal Museum of Padua), and the lunette depicting The Deposition of Christ with the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist (Milan, Pinacoteca di Brera). It is likely that Saint Sebastian dates from between 1497, the year of the Padua altarpiece, and 1511, the date of the Nativity painted for Santa Maria del Piano in Sassoferrato, Agabiti’s birthplace. In 1502 the Brotherhood of St. Roch in Jesi commissioned the construction of an altarpiece from a carpenter which was meant to have been painted by Agabiti, the subject of which was the Virgin between St. Sebastian and St. Roch. It is not impossible that the present painting originally formed part of this predella.
