Post lot text ANDREA DI BARTOLO, CRUCIFIXION, TEMPERA ON PANELAndrea di Bartolo's (1360-1428) Crucifixion, a predella panel, dates from circa 1400, a period in which the artist's style was still close to that of his father, Bartolo di Fredi (circa 1330-1410). Nevertheless, the expressive faces depicted in this Crucifixion are characteristic of the artist's later works, such as the palpable tenderness of St. John leaning towards the Virgin and the confusion visible on the faces of the soldiers. The scene follows the traditional iconography of the crucifixion, with the group of Roman soldiers on the right and the holy women and the faithful on the left. The present version is similar to the Crucifixion in the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio (inv. 1952.103), although less complex in the arrangement of the figures. The two compositions share striking details such as the pointed halo of St. Longinus, a Roman centurion touched by grace to the right of Christ, and the vivid colouring of the soldiers’ yellow tunics with their blue, tasselled belts and red shields edged in blue (this colour scheme is also found in the Road to Calvary in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection). Comparing our panel with the Toledo Crucifixion, which dates to a later period in Andrea's career, allows us to follow the evolution of his style, which is became more sophisticated while still retaining the bold dynamism of the present painting.
