TITIAN (ACTUALLY TIZIANO VECELLIO) (WORKSHOP) Circa 1488 Pieve di Cadore - 1576 Venedig PORTRAIT KARL V. Oil on canvas (old relined). 68 x 58 cm (27 ins. x 23 ins.), (Frame 94 x 80 cm). Part. min. old restored. Frame. Tizians erstes Ganzfigurenporträt Karls V. entstand sehr wahrscheinlich um 1530 in Titian's first full-length portrait of Charles V. was probably painted around 1530 in Bologna. It was lost in Spain in the middle of the 17th century and is known from a copy by Peter Paul Rubens, painted in Simancas in 1603 and recently acquired by the Royal Armouries, Leeds. It was Titian's habit to keep a visual record of the works he sent to important patrons as a basis for further variations and replicas. Max Jordan already noticed this in 1877: 'Tizian's Originalskizze, bis vor zwanzig Jahren in Bologna in der Sammlung Zambeccari aufbewahrt, kam dann in englischen Privatbesitz. Sie war ein geistvoll hingeworfenes Brustbild, das den Kaiser in der Rüstung, mit unbedecktem Haupte, bis zu den Schultern darstellte und ohne Zweifel als Unterlage zu dem ausgeführten Porträt in voller Grösse gedient hat, welches verloren ging, nachdem es eine Zierde der königlichen Paläste zu Madrid und Brüssel gewesen war.' The work offered here, executed as a bust, is described in the Witt Library in London as an early variant executed in Bologna in the 1533s. It was exhibited in Burlington House in 1908 under number 127 as an original work by Titian (see Crowe & Cavalcaselle: Titians life, 1877, pages 300-302). J. Oulton 1948 6.
