Lot 4 | Postilla super epistolas et evangelia
Estimate value
$ 4 000 – 6 000
GUILELMUS PARISIENSIS (attributed to) – [HEROLT, Johannes (d. 1468)]. Postilla super epistolas et evangelia. Ulm: Conrad Dinckmut, 1486. Klotz copy of a popular devotional text from Ulm's second printer, in a contemporary Austrian binding with 14th-century Hebrew manuscript of the Talmud as spine reinforcement. The text provides commentaries on the Gospels for use by preachers in sermon-writing; it was traditionally attributed to Guillermus, a Dominican friar of Paris, based on the preface signed by him contained in most early printed editions, but is now given to Johannes Herolt. The printer, Conrad Dinckmut, more commonly printed works in the vernacular, but here publishes a Latin text in an attractive Venetian-style type. Goff G681; H 8265*; Bod-inc G-323; BMC II 535; BSB-Ink H-153; GW 11956; ISTC ig00681000.Chancery folio (265 x 187mm). 212 leaves. Large red manuscript initials, red capital strokes and underlining (some dampstaining, light browning, a little worming at ends). Contemporary Austrian stamped calf [Art Wien Jagdrollen-Meister, EBDB w002500], pastedowns from a printed legal text, spine reinforced with strips cut from a 14th-century Hebrew Talmud, vellum quire guards (lacking bosses and straps, a little worming, joints strengthened). Provenance: early marginalia in several hands; faded stamps – “Colegii societatis Jesu Burghusii” [possibly the Jesuit College of Berghausen] (inscription dated 1646) – R. P. Gold (logic professor, inscription dated March 1775) – Leopold Hugo Paul Klotz (c. 1908-1993; his sale, Christie's, 2 November 1994, lot 76) – purchased via Bernard Rosenthal in 1998.
