Prince Philipp of Hesse joined the NSDAP in 1930 and the SA in 1931. In 1933, Hermann Göring appointed him Oberpräsident of the province of Hesse-Nassau. In 1938, he was promoted to SA Obergruppenführer and became a member of the OSAF. He received the Golden Party Badge in 1939. Hitler exploited Philipp's connections to Italy – he married Mafalda of Savoy, daughter of Vittorio Emanuele III in 1925 – in several ways: firstly, to win over Mussolini for the NS regime by unofficial means, then to inform him of the imminent attack on Poland through unofficial diplomatic channels. Moreover, Hitler set up a special account in the Prince's name at the German Embassy in Rome to acquire works of art in Italy for the museum Hitler was planning in Linz.
