Professor Kurt Schmid-Ehmen (1901 – 1968) - a model of the eagle of the Luitpoldarena at the Reichsparteitagsgelände in Nuremberg
Bronze with fine green patina. Very detailed miniature sculpture, the side of plinth with monogram “K.S-E”. Light-brown marble base, ca. 33.5 cm height x 26.5 cm width.
Prof. Kurt Schmid-Ehmen, the “Eagle Maker”, is regarded to be the creator of the Reichs Eagle and the eagle emblem of the National Socialist Party. He studied at the Leipzig Academy with Adolf Lehnert and the Munich Academy, was a master student of Bernhard Bleeker and initially attracted attention with numerous busts, including one of the famous pianist Josef Pembaur, the teacher of the concert pianist Hetty Haelssig (later Schmid-Ehmen). His entry into the NSDAP in the early 1930s and his acquaintance with the architect Paul Ludwig Troost gave him his first orders and personal acquaintance with Adolf Hitler. He designed the memorial to the fallen of 9 November 1923 in the Feldherrnhalle, the eagles to the party buildings in Munich, on the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg, the eagle relief Smoking Room in the New Reichs Chancellery. Schmid-Ehmen created his largest bronze eagle, nine meters in height, for the German Pavilion at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris and received the Grand Prix de la République Française for it. Since 1936 he was a member of the Presidential Council of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts, and on January 30, 1937, Adolf Hitler appointed him professor. In 1939 Schmid-Ehmen was represented at the Great German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich with the bronze sculpture "Female Figure".
