Lot 4085 | Professor Wilhelm Krieger (1877 - 1945) - Holz-Modell seiner für die Porzellanmanufaktur Allach entworfenen Adlerskulptur, um 1938
Estimate value
€ 3 500
Professor Wilhelm Krieger (1877 - 1945) – a wooden model of his eagle sculpture designed for Porzellanmanufaktur Allach, circa 1938
Oak wood. Majestic sculpture of an eagle on a pedestal, the plinth with the signature "Prof. Krieger" deeply scored in the side. Total height 61.5 cm. Small tension cracks, five small wormholes on the back.
After an apprenticeship as a decorator in 1906/07, Wilhelm Krieger dropped out of his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich to become a self-taught sculptor, particularly focusing on animals. He joined the Vereinigten Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk (United Workshops for Art in Craftsmanship), taking part from 1907 in the exhibitions organised by the Munich secession and in the Great Berlin Art Exhibitions. Appointed Professor h.c. by the Bavarian Ministry of Education and the Arts in 1927. From 1937 to 1944, he showed numerous animal sculptures in the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich, in which he participated with this eagle sculpture in stone (104 cm) in 1937. Nonetheless, this work achieved even wider recognition in the ceramic version, presented by Porzellanmanufaktur Allach in 1938 (model number K 10). One of the rarest figures of an eagle in a series of just 52 copies and, measuring 70 cm, the largest of all animal figures produced by PMA.
