Lot 172 | Profiles in Courage, Alfred Eisenstaedt's copy
Estimate value
$ 6 000 – 8 000
A presentation copy inscribed to photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. During a long convalescence from spinal surgery Senator Kennedy began a collection of biographies of politicians distinguished for taking unpopular stands. The work's working title was Courage in the Senate, but it was published as Profiles in Courage. The book rapidly became a best-seller and Kennedy was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. This copy is inscribed by Kennedy on the front blank endpaper: "For Alfred Eisenstaedt with every good wish John Kennedy." Eisenstaedt was perhaps the greatest of the photographers for Life magazine. “He was especially renowned for his ability to capture memorable images of important people in the news, including statesmen, movie stars, and artists” (New York Times). Eisenstaedt photographed Kennedy extensively during the 1960 presidential campaign and during his presidency—indeed one of the most commonly found photographs signed and inscribed by Kennedy during his presidency is a seated portrait by Eisenstaedt. A superb association copy linking Kennedy and a giant of photojournalism.
Octavo (212 x 138mm). (Slight feathering to inscription). Cloth boards with black spine and gilt lettering. First state dustjacket (minor marginal tears and chips, some sunning to spine).
