Lot 96 | PUCCINI, Giacomo (1858-1924)
Estimate value
£ 1 800 – 2 500
Autograph letter signed ('Giacomo') to Rose [Ader], Regina-Palast Hotel, Munich, 'midnight', 23 August 1921.
In Italian and German. Four pages, 184 x 142mm, bifolium. Envelope addressed to Rose in Hamburg. Provenance: with David Schulson Autographs, July 2001.
Returning to his hotel after a performance of Cosi fan tutte, Puccini is sad not to find a telegram from Rose: 'It feels as if I am missing something necessary for living, and as if my heart was no longer beating – I feel a strange fear within myself ... I am always afraid that your love will fail me. If I were younger you would not dare!'. Puccini thanks God for giving him their love affair, but worries that 'Our love hidden in this way cannot satisfy you'. Suddenly the letter breaks off into multilingual exclamations of delight ('Hoch! Hoch! Hoch! Eviva, Eviva! Urrà Banzai! Banzai!'), as her telegram has now arrived, and he will now be able to sleep well, comforted by her love: 'danke dankissime meine Gute Engel mein Herz, mio tesoro!'.
