WAUGH, Evelyn (1903-1966). Put Out More Flags. London: Chapman and Hall Ltd. 1942.
First edition of the wartime social satire, which ‘Most reviewers found … brilliant and, correctly, detected a new seriousness in his tone’ (ODNB). Davis 17. Octavo. (Faint spotting to first few leaves and fore-edge.) Original grey and speckled blue cloth, top edge stained blue (spine and edges sunned); original dust-jacket (extremities lightly soiled, a few nicks concentrated to head and tail of backstrip).

– The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold. London: Chapman & Hall, 1957.
First edition, trade issue, of Waugh’s semi-autobiographical work based on the hallucinations he endured from bromide poisoning while self-medicating. Davis 31. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine lightly worn); original dust-jacket with illustrations by Bird (extremities very lightly rubbed).

First edition of Waugh’s acclaimed biography of the Pre-Raphaelite artist. Davis 3. Octavo. Frontispiece and seven illustrations (faint spotting to half-title and fore-edge). Original burgundy cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine and upper edge faded); original supplied dust-jacket (spine sunned, extremities lightly rubbed).

– Remote People. London: Duckworth, 1931.
First edition of Waugh’s travels in Africa in 1930 while covering Haile Selassie's coronation for The Times. Davis 7. Octavo. Frontispiece and six black and white illustrations and two folded maps, printed on recto and verso (light spotting mainly confined to fore-edge). Original burgundy cloth, spine lettered in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed); original green dust-jacket (lightly rubbed and soiled, spine faintly soiled, head- and foot of spine panel faintly bruised and with some tiny nicks). Provenance: gift inscription to front free endpaper dated 1958.

– Robbery Under Law: The Mexican Object Lesson. London: Chapman and Hall, 1939.
First edition, authorial presentation copy. Davis 16. Large octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed, spine faded); original dust-jacket (extremities rubbed, flaps spotted, large chip to top of backstrip and lower panel, upper panel with large 103mm closed tear repaired on verso with tape, several further small creases and nicks). Provenance: authorial presentation inscription to front free endpaper, dated July 4th 1939, to:) – Frederick Godber (1st Baron Godber of Mayfield, 1888-1976).

First edition in the John Piper designed dust-jacket. Davis 21. Octavo. (Light spotting, heaviest to final gathering.) Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine rubbed); original pictorial dust-jacket (faintly soiled). Provenance: Christopher Sykes (authorial presentation inscription in pencil to front free endpaper, dated Christmas 1947).

First edition. Davis 33. Octavo. Frontispiece and 19 illustrations on 9 leaves. Original blue boards, spine lettered in silver (headcap bruised); original dust-jacket (tanned, faint ring mark to upper cover, a few very tiny tears).
