Very rare first edition of the fourth of Rameau's musical tragedies to be staged. The first performance took place on 5 December 1749 at the Royal Academy of Music in Paris. It is the first major French opera without an allegorical prologue. Hirsch II, 792; RISM R-171.

Oblong quarto (245 x 316mm). Woodcut device on title, 189 pp., letterpress title, engraved throughout (pp. 33-36 coming loose, occasional faint spotting, otherwise fresh and crisp). Contemporary calf, gilt spine, red speckled edges, marbled endpapers (covers stained, extremities rubbed, lacking front free endpaper).
