First edition of the 16th Relation, on the new Abenaki mission and the death of Father Isaac Jogues. Jogues had previously been captured and tortured by the Iroquois in 1642-3, but a successful embassy to the Mohawks inspired him to make a mission to them in September 1646. Lalemant writes that Jogues's misplaced confidence caused him to behave rudely to the Mohawks, who beheaded him and his companion—ending the fragile peace that had held between them and the French and their allies. Bell 33; Church 487; McCoy 65/6; Sabin 38685.
Octavo (161 x 103mm). Woodcut printer's device (dampstained, toned). 19th-century marbled wrappers (front wrapper detached). Provenance: John Percivale Baronet of Burton (armorial bookplate on title verso) – Riggs Library, Georgetown (stamps).
