[THIRTY-EIGHTH JESUIT RELATION] – Relation de ce qui s'est passe de plus remarquable aux missions des pères de la Compagnie de Iesus en la Nouvelle France les années 1668 & 1669. Paris: Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1670.

First edition of the 38th relation, including a letter by the governor of New York and a report of a Christian Huron girl who was miraculously uncorrupted after death. This relation was not issued with the usual letter of transmittal indicating authorship. The letter from the governor of New York is a somewhat non-commital response to Father Pierron, who had complained about alcohol being sold to Native people at Albany. Howes J-106 ("b").

Octavo (173 x 108mm). Woodcut vase on title. Contemporary vellum. Provenance: Frank T. Siebert (acquired from Harmsworth-Stevens in 1952 and sold his sale, Sotheby's New York, 21 May 1999, lot 60, to:) – Joseph A. Freilich (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's New York, 10 January 2001, lot 297).
