Provenance

Henry Harper Benedict (1844-1935), New York (Lugt 1298); by descent to his wife Josephine Katherine; presumably sold privately soon after his death.
With Kennedy Galleries, New York (with their stocknumber a.10598 in pencil verso); possibly acquired from the above.
Raphaël Esmerian (1903-1976), Paris and New York (his stamp R.E. in a rectangle, verso; not in Lugt); presumably acquired from the above.
Probably with Knoedler & Co, New York (with their stocknumber K378 in pencil verso).
Sotheby's, New York, 'The Property of a Lady', 10 May 1973, lot 152 (erroneously described as having touches of wash) ($ 14,000).
With Franglo Fine Arts, London.
Sam Josefowitz (Lugt 6094); acquired from the above in 1980; then by descent to the present owners.
