"Junger Elefant". Originaltitel
Bronze, in nuancierten gold- bis dunkelbraunen Tönen patiniert, 1926. Am linken Hinterfuß sign. mit Monogramm "R. S.". Wvz. Berger/Ladwig, Nr. 086, Buhlmann Nr. 220. Sintenis gehört zu den prägenden deutschen Bildhauerinnen der Moderne. Seit 1913 stellte sie in der Berliner Secession aus, zu ihrem Schaffensschwerpunkt wurden ihre kleinen, prägnanten Tierfiguren, bei denen sie subtile, genaue Naturbeobachtung mit auf das Wesentliche reduzierender Stilisierung verband. In den 1920er Jahren feierte sie ihre größten Erfolge, Alfred Flechtheim wurde ihr Galerist und zeigte ihre Werke bis 1933 in zahlreichen Ausstellungen. 1925 rühmte der Schriftsteller Hans Siemsen die Bildhauerin als eine der "ernstet zu nehmenden und wichtigsten Erscheinungen unserer Zeit" in seinem Artikel "Neue Tierplastiken von Renee Sintenis" in der maßgeblichen Zeitschrift "Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration": "Es gehört zu den vielen Qualitäten dieser seltenen Künstlerin, daß sie die Freunde und Bewunderer ihre Kunst nie enttäuscht. Eine außergewöhnlich strenge Selbstkritik, die sehr hohe Ansprüche an die eigene Arbeit und Leistung gewohnt ist, wird hinter all der Grazie und Liebenswürdigkeit dieser kleinen Tier-Bronzen sichtbar". Für Siemsen steht das kleine Format hierbei im "diametralen Gegensatz zur Größe der Auffassung (...)", sodass ihre "kleinen Bronzen sehr viel 'größer' sind und sehr viel 'schwerer wiegen' als mancher ausgewachsene Elefant". 1931 berief man Sintenis als erste Bildhauerin an die Berliner Akademie der Künste, doch erzwangen die Nationalsozialisten 1934 ihren Austritt. In der Aktion "Entartete Kunst" im Jahr 1937 wurden Werke Sintenis' in mehreren deutschen Museen beschlagnahmt. Zu ihren bekannten Arbeiten nach 1945 avancierte ihr kleiner "Berliner Bär" - seit 1956 in versilberter bzw. vergoldeter Bronze als Preis bei den Berlinale-Filmfestspielen - und ihr großer "Berliner Bär", den man 1957 am Beginn der Westberliner Autobahn aufstellte. H. 8 cm.
Ein Exemplar befindet sich in der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Berlin (Inv.-Nr. NG 24/81).
