Bronze, dunkel patiniert. Sign. u. dat. 1927. Der Bildhauer Rudolf Belling gehört zu den großen Dogmensprengern in der Kunst des 20. Jhs., der die Kunst auch auf dem Gebiet der Plastik aus Traditionen und Konventionen befreite und in die Gegenwart der Moderne katapultierte. Dies wird auch an dieser Bronze deutlich. Bereits 1923 hatte Belling in seiner epochalen futuristischen "Skulptur 23" einen Kopf in seine einzelnen Bestandteile zerlegt, auf geometrische Grundformen reduziert und dann wieder zusammenmontiert. Bei seinem 1927 entstandenen Bildnis des bedeutenden Galeristen Alfred Flechtheim trieb er das Weglassen auf die Spitze, indem er die Darstellung auf diejenigen Gesichtsteile reduzierte, die dessen hervorstechende Merkmale in pointiert überzeichneter Weise erfassen: ausgeprägte Hakennase, schwere Lider und wulstige Lippen. Belling begann 1912 mit kubistisch-expressive Plastiken zu schaffen. Hierbei wurde er von futuristischen und konstruktivistischen Ideen, insbesondere vom befreundeten Alexander Archipenko beeinflusst. Im Dezember 1918 war Belling Mitbegründer der progressiven Künstlervereinigung "Novembergruppe". Ein Höhepunkt seines künstlerischen Schaffens ist seine Bronzeplastik "Dreiklang" in der er Gedanken einer Vereinigung der Kunstrichtungen (Malerei, Bildhauerei, Architektur) zum Ausdruck brachte. Sie entstand im Jahr 1919, als auch das Bauhaus gegründet wurde mit ähnlichen Prinzipien. 1924 fand unter Ludwig Justi eine Einzelausstellung im Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin statt, aus der die Nationalgalerie Berlin auch den "Dreiklang" erwarb. Während der Weimarer Republik zeigte die Galerie Flechtheim Werke Bellings in mehreren Gruppenausstellungen. 1931 wurde Belling in die Preußische Akademie der Künste berufen. Im "Dritten Reich" geriet Belling jedoch zunehmend in Bedrängnis, so dass er im Januar 1937 in die Türkei emigrierte, wo er bis 1965/66 lebte, arbeitete und lehrte. Seine Werke wurden von den Nationalsozialisten zerstört, beschlagnahmt und in der Schmähpropaganda-Ausstellung "Entartete Kunst" diffamiert. H. 18,3 cm.
Weitere Exemplare befinden sich u.a. im Museum of Modern Art in New York, in der Nationalgalerie in Berlin, in der Hamburger Kunsthalle, im Hessischen Landesmuseum in Darmstadt, im Museum Ludwig in Köln, im Busch-Reisinger-Museum in Cambridge/Mass und im Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
