Fragment de papier peint à la planche, à la grammaire décorative républicaine.

Malgré les perturbations économiques qu'elle engendre, la Révolution française est une période propice à la production manufacturée de papiers peints. Les commandes officielles se portent sur des motifs glorifiant le nouveau régime, qui recouvrent peu à peu les lieux de pouvoir de la capitale. L'usage du papier peint, autrefois considéré comme un succédané bon marché des tapisseries et étoffes, dans ces lieux officiels, participe à conférer au matériau ses lettres de noblesse. 570 x 440 mm. Fragment de papier peint à décor gouaché, deux lés juxtaposés. Encadré. Fond bleu pâle parcouru de rinceaux de chêne. Motifs isolés en grisaille : arc de triomphe à trois arches portant sur son fronton l’inscription “ à l’égalité” ; bonnet phrygien surmontant une couronne de laurier et un faisceau de licteur formant le pied d’une balance de la justice ; coq juché sur un tonneau, devant un cyprès. (craquelures, plis, quelques manques à la couche picturale, rares mouillures).
