Estimate value
£ 12 000 – 18 000
Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Autograph manuscript of the partsong 'Der traurige Jäger' (op.75 no.8), [Dresden, 1849]
The Stichvorlage, notated for soprano, two altos, tenor and bass on three systems of four or five staves, two pages, 303 x 230mm, marked up by the printer in pencil and red crayon. Modern portfolio.

A complete partsong, depicting a hunter's lament at the death of a beautiful miller's wife. The text is by Eichendorff. The song was published in 1850 by Whistling, as part of Schumann's second collection of partsongs, Romanzen und Balladen. Not in Margit L. McCorkle, Robert Schumann. Thematisch-Bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis (Munich, 2003). Complete autograph music manuscripts by Schumann are rare at auction: RBH records only one in the past five years (the song 'Erstes Grün', op.35 no.4, sold at Sotheby's Paris, 22 May 2019, lot 99, EUR 52,500).
