Estimate value
£ 10 000 – 15 000
Fasciculus temporum, in Dutch: Dat boek dat men hiet Fasciculus temporum. Utrecht: Johann Veldener, 14 February 1480.
First edition in Dutch of the first printed chronological history of the world. Veldener had printed a Latin edition at Louvain in 1475. To this Dutch edition he added extensive supplements oriented to a Dutch public on the history of the dukes of Brabant, bishops of Utrecht, and counts of Holland, Zeeland and Hainaut, as well as the kings of France and England. Its translator remains anonymous. Twelve woodcuts, strongly based on cuts in the Rudimentum novitiorum (Lübeck 1475), and the set of coats-of-arms are original to the Utrecht edition; they are the work of the 'Utrecht woodcutter' (Conway p.209). They are additional to 8 woodcuts which Veldener first used in his Louvain edition and in which some have seen Veldener's hand as artist (cf. Arnim, Schäfer 288, notes 6-7). As the presence of the blank leaf 42/8 and the stitching demonstrate, the final quire contains 10 leaves, with 43/10 also a blank. HC 9646; BMC IX, 12; CIBN R-188; Goff R-278; IDL 3950; Schreiber 5122a; Cinquième centenaire 76; ISTC ir00278000.
Chancery folio (262 x 194mm). 339 (of 340, without final blank) leaves. Full woodcut ornamental frame in four parts to preface and first text leaf, large decorative initial opening preface, historiated initials opening text, 35 woodcuts from 20 blocks, numerous coats-of-arms, Veldener's device (Juchhoff 55) printed twice, printed guide-letters, rubricated and with one initial with interlocking red and blue (the 2 woodcut borders slightly trimmed, very light dampstain at some extreme upper margins, an occasional small stain, blank corner of 33/2 mended, very small tear in 29/7,8 affecting 1 letter). Early 16th-century calf over wooden boards, blindstamped with roll-tools, 2 brass fore-edge clasps (clasps renewed, repaired at spine, endleaves renewed). Provenance: Carlo de Poortere (sale Christie's 26 June 1996, lot 172; booklabel).
