Lot 4041 | Römisches Mosaik mit Eros auf einem Löwen, Mitte 3. Jhdt. n. Chr.
Montiert in Metallrahmen.

A Roman mosaic with cupid on a lion, mid-3rd century A.D.
A Roman mosaic with cupid on a lion, mid-3rd century A.D.
Square mosaic field, trimmed by a four-coloured interlaced band of reddish, siena-brown, black and white tesserae. The central motif on white ground framed by an octagon with two black contour lines, the outer line bordering on alternating black and faded brown squares. In the middle the central motif: a winged cupid with bent left leg, a garland in his hair and a thyrsus wand in his right hand, elegantly seated on a lion striding towards the right with raised tail tassel, its head facing the viewer. With his left hand the cupid is grasping the lion’s mane. The lion’s fur and the cupid’s body give a three-dimensional impression due to the skilfully placed colour shading. Minor restorations and replacements. Mounted in a metal frame. The images of Roman mosaics were based on models, which explains why strikingly similar designs were found in different places. A close parallel to the mosaic at hand is a field with Dionysus mosaic in the Peristyle house in Cologne showing a mirror image of the riding cupid, which was obviously based on the same model. The mosaic offered at this auction probably also formed part of a complex mosaic with depictions from a thiasus of Dionysus. Dimensions 98 x 98 cm, in a metal frame.
