Estimate value
€ 3 000 – 5 000
A splendid copy in red morocco of this fundamental work on Russia and Russian costumes and the first in English "to give an accurate representation in both text and illustrations of the manners and customs of the ordinary Russian people" demonstrating 'Atkinson's lively draughtsmanship and the width of his observations' (ODNB). According to Abbey the plates "show the spontaneity and spirit possible when the artist is his own engraver. It seems possible that in some passages sugar aquatint was used. The colouring is skilfully done, in soft washes". Watermarked 1801-03.
3 tomes in one volume, folio (450 x 316mm). Half-titles to each part, engraved frontispiece portrait at beginning, 100 hand-coloured etched and aquatint plates, by and after Atkinson, text in English and French (light offsetting from plates, occasional light scattered spotting, small repaired tear to margin of plate index in tome III and few other small marginal repairs). Contemporary red morocco, gilt decorations on panels, spine elaborately decorated in gilt, turn-ins and edges (extremities and joints slightly rubbed, a small scuff mark on front panel, few stains on rear panel, labels with title and printing details renewed). Abbey Travel 223; Lipperheide Kaa 21; Colas 171; Tooley 72.
