Lot 257 | RUSSIA - LE PRINCE, Jean-Baptiste (1734-1781) - Oeuvres. Paris: Basan e Poignat, F. Chereau, 1782.
[RUSSIA] - LE PRINCE, Jean-Baptiste (1734-1781) - Oeuvres. Paris: Basan e Poignat, F. Chereau, 1782.

First edition, a great collection of etchings by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, regarded as the first artist to use aquatint. Many of the plates in this volume depict Russian scenes and subjects; this particular copy seems to have the highest number of plates compared to others. The work was conceived following the author's stay in Russia at the court of Catherine II (1758-1763), a period during which he made numerous sketches of clothes, hairstyles and scenes of local customs and traditions.

Elephant folio (574 x 410mm). Woodcut device on title, 163 engraved plates of which 88 etched and 75 aquatint, 8 have been inserted and could be from another copy (some occasional spotting mainly marginal). Contemporary orange boards (some wear, lacking most part of spine).

The lot is accompanied by a export license.
