Further Details
A CARVED LIMEWOOD GROUP OF THE VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH SAINT ANNE OR 'ANNA SELBDRITT', SOUTH GERMAN, CIRCLE OF THE MASTER OF RABENDEN, CIRCA 1520
Carved wooden groups depicting the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne were very popular in Europe from the end of the 15th Century, particularly in southern Germany, where they took the name of "Anna Selbridtt". Parallels can be drawn between the present sculpture and that now in the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar (inv. no. 89.3.1, fig. 1). There are similarities in size and in the notably square fingers and faces seen in both groups. These same characteristics made it possible to attribute the Colmar sculpture to the workshop of the Master of Rabenden.
On the basis of comparisons with an altarpiece from the town of Rabenden in Upper Bavaria, between Munich and Salzburg, it was possible to build up a homogeneous corpus for a workshop active in Munich around 1510-1525, today known as the "workshop of the Master of Rabenden".
