Provenienz: Laut Aussagen des Vorbesitzers und beiliegender Korrespondenz ursprünglich im Besitz der Großfürstin Anna Pawlowna von Holstein-Gottorp-Romanow, Großfürstin von Russland, jüngste Tochter des Zaren Paul I. von Russland. Sie schenkte die Schatulle später ihrer einzigen Tochter Sophie, dem fünften Kind von Anna und Wilhelm II. der Niederlande. Sophie, Großerherzogin von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, vererbte sie ihrer ältesten Tochter, Marie von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, durch Heirat Prinzessin Reuß zu Köstritz. Die Schatulle wurde fortan im Herrschergeschlecht Reuß weitergegeben.
A French jewellery casket from the possession of Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia, mid-19th century
Of rectangular form with hinged lid and folding front, the exterior with a cover resembling tortoiseshell. The obverse and lid elaborately decorated in Boulle work with ornamental brass and mother-of-pearl inlays. The exterior with brass applications: the corners adorned with mythical creatures, the lower edge and lid embellished with a gilt floral frieze. Velvet covered base. Satinwood interior. Flat jewellery tray. Removable drawer with velvet insert. With key. Lower edge with two losses, brittle, rubbed. Dimensions 17 x 34 x 25 cm. With a letter of the previous owner Sophie-Renata Princess XXXIV Reuß from 1941.
Provenance: According to former owner and the letter this casket belonged to Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna, youngest daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia. She gave it to her daughter Sophie, the fifth child of Anna and Wilhelm II of the Netherlands. Princess Sophie of the Netherlands gave it to her daughter Princess Marie Alexandrine of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, upon marriage Princess Reuss of Köstritz. Since then, this casket belonged to the nobility of Reuss.
