Thronende Schöne Madonna
Lindenholz dreiviertelrund geschnitzt, auf der Rückseite abgeflacht und stark ausgehöhlt. Originale, polychrome Fassung und Vergoldung in großen Teilen erhalten, teilw. übermalt. Auf Unteransicht komponierte Darstellung der auf einer schlichten Thronbank sitzenden, bekrönten Madonna. Über ihrem hochgegürteten, roten Kleid trägt Maria einen über die Schultern gelegten, blau-goldenen Mantelumhang, der über ihre Knie drapiert ist. Auf ihrem rechten Knie sitzt das nackte Kind, welches sie mit ihrer rechten Hand in liebevoller, mütterlicher Zuneigung behütend umfängt, in ihrer Linken präsentiert sie einen Granatapfel als Passionssymbol. Stilistisch noch dem Weichen Stil zugewandte, künstlerisch herausragende Skulptur musealer Qualität. Das glücklicherweise in großen Teilen im Original erhaltene Inkarnat von Mutter und Kind, mit den typisch geröteten Wangen, zeigt die außerordentlich meisterhafte Hand des Fassungsmalers und verdeutlicht den gütigen und feinen Ausdruck der beiden. Der Versuch dadurch eine große Nähe zum Betrachter, dem Gläubigen herzustellen, geht aus dem Schönen Stil um 1400 hervor und ist, wie diese Madonna verdeutlicht, auch am Ende des Jahrhunderts noch zu spüren. Solch einen warmherzigen Blick besitzt auch die thronende Madonna (1490-1500) im Metropolitan Museum New York (The Cloisters Collection, Inv.-Nr. 2010.446), die mit dem Kefermarkter Altar in Verbindung gebracht wird, der auch Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts entstanden ist. Aufbau, Stil und Ausarbeitung erinnern an die Skulpturen berühmter Bildschnitzer der Ulmer Gegend, wie Jörg Stein (arbeitet um 1470), Michel Erhart (1440/45-nach 1522) und Jörg Syrlin d. Ä. (1425-1491). Hierzu sei die Heilige Katharina von Jörg Stein (Werkstatt) erwähnt, die um 1470 in Ulm entstanden ist (Museum der Diözese Rottenburg-Stuttgart, Inv. Nr. 1.284). Jesus als das verspielte Kind lässt die prägenden Einflüsse einer Generation davor, vor allem von Hans Multscher (1400-1467) erkennen. Rest.; Ges.-H. 128 cm. Figuren-H. 116 cm.
