Thailand. Chakri dynasty (since 1782). 19. Century

Pigments and Gold on hand woven silk. In the centre of the Buddha stands with hands in the gesture of bestowing fearlessness (abhaya mudra). He is clothed with an orange-red kasaya-robe and behind his head, a teardrop-shaped Mandorla extends. The Lotus flower under his feet is situated on a getreppten and ornate Base. The red Background is printed with flowers and extends to a typical Thai temple roof. In a Few Apsara are in the clouds visible in the adoration gesture, being able to hold a Lotus flower. Under the Buddha flowers, a Few candles and incense on an Altar. In the frame with flowers in a cartouche for the name of the founder is located on the bottom edge.

This type of hangings are referred to in Thailand as pa bai, and temples were donated. Their production creates merits (thamboon) for the soul of the founder, as well as the painter. 316x96cm. Condition B. Central fold and slightly rubbed.
Provenance:
-Collection Of Prof. Dr. Reinhold Lucius (1880-1966). It was until 1914 in Thailand, among other things, as a University Professor. He founded in the North of Bangkok, a temple, and out of gratitude the Elbe were in these long temp hanging worshipped by the Abbot of a monastery.
-Private collection Baden-Württemberg by inheritance
