Thailand. Chakri-Dynastie (seit 1782). 19. Jahrhundert

Pigmente und Gold auf handgewebter Seide. Im Zentrum steht der Buddha mit den Händen in der Geste der Verleihung der Furchtlosigkeit (abhaya mudra). Er ist mit einem orange-roten kasaya-Gewand bekleidet und hinter seinen Kopf erstreckt sich eine tropfenförmige Mandorla. Die Lotosblüte unter seinen Füßen liegt auf einem getreppten und reich verzierten Sockel. Der rote Hintergrund ist mit Blüten bedruckt und erstreckt sich bis unter ein typisch thailändisches Tempeldach. Darüber werden in Wolken ein Paar Apsara sichtbar, die in Anbetungsgeste jweils eine Lotosblüte halten. Unter dem Buddha stehen auf einem Altar Blumen, ein Paar Kerzen und Räucherstäbchen. Im Rahmen mit Blüten befindet sich am unteren Rand eine Kartusche für den Namen der Stifter.

Diese Art von Behängen werden in Thailand als pa bai bezeichnet und wurden Tempeln gestiftet. Ihre Herstellung schafft Verdienste (thamboon) für die Seele der Stifter, wie auch der Maler. 316x96cm. Zustand B. Mittelfalte und etwas berieben.
Provenienz:
-Sammlung Prof. Dr. Reinhold Lucius (1880-1966). War bis 1914 in Thailand unter anderem als Universitätsprofessor tätig. Er stiftete im Norden von Bangkok einen Tempel und aus Dankbarkeit wurden im diese langen Tempelbehänge vom Abt eines Klosters verehrt.
