Thailand. Chakri-Dynastie (seit 1782). 19. Jahrhundert

Pigment auf handgewebter Seide. Der Behang zeigt Begebnisse aus dem Leben des Buddha, wie sie vor allem in Thailand verbreitet sind. Oben ist zu sehen, wie sich der Prinz, aus dem später der Buddha wird, das lange Haar abschneidet. Darunter begegnet der Prinz auf einem Schimmel einem grünhäutigen Dämon mit Keule. Weiter unten ist der Palast der Shakya-Familie zu sehen. Im Garten steht die Königin bei der Geburt des Prinzen, wie in der Überlieferung erzählt. Ganz unten ist wohl die Begegnung des Prinzen mit Krankheit, Alter und Tod angedeutet.

Behänge mit Jataka dienen der Belehrung. In dieser Größe waren sie sicher nur im Tempel zu finden. 336x88cm. Zustand B. Berieben.
Provenienz:
-Sammlung Prof. Dr. Reinhold Lucius (1880-1966). War bis 1914 in Thailand unter anderem als Universitätsprofessor tätig. Er stiftete im Norden von Bangkok einen Tempel und aus Dankbarkeit wurden im diese langen Tempelbehänge von einem Abt verehrt.
