RARE NORMAPHONE JULIUS RUDOLF Gothar, around 1924 Brass, partly nickel-plated, 3 rotary valves, with mouthpiece. H. 50 cm, W. 20 cm, D. 13 cm. The normaphone or jazzophone is an almost forgotten instrument, a rotary valve trumpet in saxophone form. The normaphone was invented by the Markneukirchen instrument maker Richard Oskar Heber (1872-1938) and manufactured and marketed in the Vogtland region of Saxony through musical instrument dealers based there. The saxophone-shaped instrument was a fashionable instrument of the 1920s and 1930s and was occasionally used in jazz bands. In 1872, musician and instrument maker Julius Rudolph founded a musical instrument shop and workshop at Gretengasse 24 in Gotha. Das Normaphon oder auch Jazzophon ist ein fast vergessenes Instrument, eine Drehventiltrompete in Saxophon-Form. Das Normaphon wurde vom Markneukirchener Instrumentenbauer Richard Oskar Heber (1872-1938) erfunden und im sächsischen Vogtland über dort ansässige Musikinstrumenten-Händler gefertigt und vermarktet. Das saxophonförmige Instrument war ein Modeinstrument der 1920er und 1930er Jahre und kam vereinzelt in Jazz-Bands zum Einsatz. 1872 gründete der Musiker und Instrumentenmacher Julius Rudolph in der Gretengasse 24 in Gotha eine Musikinstrumentenhandlung und -werkstatt.
