'Composition orange L23', colour lithograph on paper, 1956, 50 cm x 65,5 cm sheet dimensions, signed, numbered 63/95, foxing, slightly darkened, mounting residues on verso, literature: Cat. rais. Schneider 23
Serge Poliakoff, born in 1906, is considered an important representative of the ''École de Paris'' and the French abstract art movement. From 1929, the young artist studied at the Paris academies Forchot and de la Grande Chaumière. There he found his way to geometric abstraction at the end of the 1930s. Poliakoff developed an individual pictorial language within abstract painting. He combined clear geometric forms with contrasting colours to create immediate, puzzle-like compositions without linear elements. The work ''Composition orange L23''' impressively illustrates his artistic pictorial language. The mixture and superimposition of relatively few primary colours in orange nuances illustrates his tendency towards monochrome design in his late work.
