MEINHOLD, William (1797-1851). Sidonia the Sorceress. Translated by Francesca Speranza, Lady Wilde. Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1893.  First edition from the Kelmscott press, of "An Historical romance, based more or less on fact, concerning the Witch Fever" (Morris). The singular work of Pomeranian priest William Meinhold, this immersive historical novel was highly influential on the pre-Raphaelites. This translation by Lady Wilde, mother of Oscar, had been previously printed in 1849 and was already well known to Morris's artistic milieu. One of 300 copies from an edition of 310. Peterson 19A; see Morris's announcement for the book.  Quarto (285 x 203mm). Printed in red and black in Golden type. Woodcut borders and initials (slightest toning at edges of a few leaves). Contemporary limp vellum with silk ties. Provenance: Frederick John Hancock Lloyd (bookplate) – Philip C. Duschnes Rare Books (label on rear pastedown).
