Post lot text
Stamping the Water (Performance in the Lhasa River, Tibet, 1996) est issue de l’une des performances les plus marquantes de l’artiste, durant laquelle, pendant une heure, Song Dong s’est assis dans la rivière Lhasa, au Tibet, et a tamponné l'eau avec un sceau en bois gravé du caractère chinois pour l'eau (shui 水).
Song Dong is a multi-disciplinary artist who is interested in performance, video, installations, painting, sculpture and calligraphy. In order to recreate dialogue and exchange, the artist deliberately explores themes such as consumption, poverty and globalisation. Stamping the Water (Performance in the Lhasa River, Tibet, 1996) is the result of one of the artist's most significant performances, during which, for one hour, Song Dong sat in the Lhasa River in Tibet and stamped the water with a wooden seal engraved with the Chinese character for water (shui 水). Following the performance, the artist said: “I exerted great force[stamping the seal on the water], but in the end I left no trace.” Song Dong's work has been exhibited in many international museums, such as MoMA, the Guggenheim, and is in the collections of the Tate Modern and the Centre Pompidou.
