Post lot text
After studying at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Yu Hong established herself as one of the young talents of Chinese contemporary figuration in the early 1990's through her participation in the New Generation exhibition at the National Museum of Chinese History in Beijing. She has since participated in numerous international group exhibitions, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the National Art Museum of China. Her work is characterised by her exploration and recontextualisation of the social role of women in China today, in a style that could be described as 'new realist', combining illusion and reality, references to the modern and the ancient. This aspect of the artist's work is particularly pronounced in the She series. In its journalistic representations of Chinese women, the series aims to generate a form of social narrative through the immediate environment in which it places its models. Although the sociological aspect is less pronounced in Two Acrobatic Children, it nevertheless illustrates another important feature of Hong's work. This deeply intimate work, depicting two young girls during a gymnastics class, devoid of any context, illustrates the way in which the artist enjoys depicting all the stages of life, whether they are banal or important.
