Die Legende des Heiligen Eustachius
Simultane, über- und nebeneinander gestaffelte Darstellung der verschiedenen Legenden-Episoden des Eustachius, dem frühchristlichen Märtyrer (gestorben um 118 unter Kaiser Hadrian). Großformatiges Andachtsbild mit halbrundbogenförmiger Komposition, in den beiden Zwickeln jeweils ein Renaissance-Schild. Im Bildfeld wird der Betrachter in der Tradition spätgotischer Heiligenbilder visuell durch die Gleichzeitigkeit und die Fülle an Details in den Einzelszenen überwältigt, so dass er in diesem "Wimmelbild" nicht zugleich das große Ganze der Bildkomposition wahrnehmen kann. Die Legende berichtet vom Jäger und Heerführer Eustachius in einer Legion in Kleinasien unter Kaiser Trajan. Bekehrt wurde er bei der Jagd, als ihm ein Hirsch mit leuchtendem Kruzifix zwischen seinem Geweih und später Christus selbst erschien. Daraufhin ließ er sich mit seiner Familie taufen, bestieg mit dieser ein Schiff nach Ägypten, wurde ins Meer gestürzt, konnte sich aber an Land retten. Bei der Überquerung eines Flusses riss ein Wolf den einen Sohn, ein Löwe den anderen mit sich, vertrieben durch Hirten und Bauern, welche die Söhne aufnahmen. Eustachius verdingte sich, getrennt von seiner verschleppten Frau und Kinder, als Knecht. Der von Feinden bedrängte Kaiser Trajan ließ über 15 Jahre nach Eustachius suchen, schließlich fanden ihn Ritter und führten ihn mit großen Ehren zurück (Szenen links und rechts unten). Nachdem sich jedoch Eustachius mit seiner Familie weigerte an der Opferfeier nach einem Sieg teilzunehmen, ließ ihn Trajans Nachfolger Kaiser Hadrian einem Löwen vorwerfen (der sich aber nur vor Eustachius verneigte) und schließlich verbrennen (Szene rechts oben mit Gottvater und der Taube des Heigen Geistes).
