Lot 7 | The Founding of Acadia, legally
Estimate value
$ 5 000 – 8 000
ACADIA – PELEUS, Julien (1550-1625). Les oeuvres de M. Iulian Peleus, Advocat en Parlement. Paris: Toussainct du Bray, 1632.

Apparently unrecorded issue of an important legal text describing the disputes related to Pierre Dugua de Monts and the founding of the colony of Acadia. De Monts was granted a license by the King to trade furs and establish a settlement in Acadia, joined by Samuel Champlain and Marc Lescarbot. The machinations of jealous merchants led to the revocation of his license and embroilment in a legal battle that became a important case study. This present edition seems to be a close reprint of the 1631 edition printed chez Louys Vandosme. No copies recorded at auction by ABPC or RBH. See USTC 6003251 (1631 edition).

Folio (350 x 215mm). Engraved device on title (spotting and browning; marginal wormholes, mostly repaired and occasionally touching letters; dampstaining in corners; two repaired tears affecting text). Contemporary calf (neatly rebacked and restored). Provenance: Peter Joseph Bourgade (signature on title).
