Lot 6 | Poems on the Siege of La Rochelle
Estimate value
$ 5 000 – 8 000
Two poems about the Siege of La Rochelle, by the famous explorer and author of Histoire de la Nouvelle-France. Lescarbot had sailed from La Rochelle over 20 years earlier on his journey to Acadia, and he brings the same “necessaire et vital” sense of “plaisir de voir et montrer” to this work as with his poetry and prose on the New World (Poirier). No copies recorded at auction in ABPC or RBH; USTC identifies 5 copies, and only one outside France (BL). USTC 6019346. See Guy Poirier, “Marc Lescarbot au pays des Ithyphalles” in Renaissance et Réforme XVII, 3 (1993).
Octavo (165 x 105mm). Woodcut armorial on title, woodcut initial and headpiece (toned, small repair to blank upper corner). Modern blue morocco by Lortic, edges gilt. Provenance: Jesuit inscription dated 1655 (faded).
