Inscribed first edition, first issue in fine condition, Donald Yates’s copy. Marlowe makes his third appearance here, entering the world of obsessive collecting and underworld dealings to investigate the theft of a rare gold coin, the 1787 Brasher Doubloon. It is inscribed by Chandler below the ownership of Donald Yates, professor of Spanish-American literature at Michigan State University. As well as being a Borges scholar, Yates had a keen interest in detective fiction throughout his career and in 1972 published the only anthology of Spanish American detective fiction.
