The Lady in the Lake

Raymond Chandler

CHANDLER, Raymond (1888-1959). The Lady in the Lake. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943.

Presentation copy of the first edition in the dust-jacket, inscribed ‘For my Sweet and Lovely Louise, who is not at all like any of the ladies in this book / Ray / La Jolla, Sept 30, 1956’. The recipient is surely Louise Loughner, an admirer from San Francisco with whom Chandler struck up a steamy epistolary romance in 1955-56 after his suicide attempt (they only met in person once). It is Chandler’s fourth novel featuring detective Philip Marlowe and ‘a superb tale... It is Chandler's masterpiece and true detection’ (Barzun & Taylor, Catalogue of Crime 483). Bruccoli A4.1.a.

Octavo. Original light green cloth stamped in dark green; original pictorial dust-jacket by Norman Reeves (tiny puncture in back jacket and faint vertical stain, minor edgewear); modern half brown slipcase. Provenance: Louise [Loughner] (authorial presentation inscription) – [sold Christie’s NY, 4 Dec. 2018, lot 180].
