The Silk Stocking Murders

Anthony Berkeley

Anthony BERKELEY (1893-1971). The Silk Stocking Murders. A Roger Sheringham Case. London: W. Collins Sons & Co. Ltd., 1928.

First edition in the very rare dust-jacket: no copies in the jacket are listed in auction records. A classic Golden Age crime novel, The Silk Stocking Murders is one of the first to feature a serial killer. Amateur detective Roger Sheringham investigates the disappearance of a vicar's daughter and discovers that she is already dead after she is found hanging from a screw by her own silk stocking. Similar deaths across the city convince Sheringham that this is the work of a homicidal psychopath. It was an important influence on Agatha Christie’s mysteries of the 1930s and in particular her ABC Murders (1936; see lot 34).

Octavo. (A few faint spots and marginal marks.) Original blue cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in orange (a few small marks, one corner just pushed, extremities lightly rubbed); original pictorial dust-jacket (lightly marked, a few repaired closed tears, head of spine panel frayed and chipped just into letters, small chips or tears to corners).
