Further details

THOMAS COUTURE, STUDY OF A ZOUAVE HOLDING A GUN WITH BAYONET, BLACK CHALK, ON GREY PAPER

Couture produced a number of preparatory studies for an unrealised decorative design for the Louvre’s Denon Pavilion, depicting the French Empire pushed back Anarchy with the support of the Church and the Army (R. Ballu, Catalogue des œuvres de Th. Couture exposées au palais de l'Industrie, Paris, 1880, p. XXIII). Two other sketches are preserved at the Musée de Senlis: a compositional sketch (inv. A.00.6.64), which allows us to situate the figure in the present drawing, and a study of a zouave’s distinctive trousers (inv. A.2012.2.1). A similar study of a right arm, also in black chalk on blue paper, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. 2018.904.3), and bears an inscription in the same hand as on the present sheet.
