THOMAS COUTURE, PORTRAIT OF JULES MICHELET, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, ON GREY (FORMERLY BLUE) PAPER

This sheet is a study for the painted portrait of the famous French historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874), now in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris (inv. P.61; see B. Ottinger, Thomas Couture 1815-1879. Portraits d'une époque, exhib. cat., Senlis, Musée d’Art et d’archéologie, 2003, no. 7, ill.). Michelet commissioned the work from Couture in 1842, the painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1847, and etched by Louis Le Nain (an impression is at the Musée national du Château de Compiègne, inv. C 58.028; see Michelet, sa vie, son œuvre : 1798-1874, exhib. cat., Paris, Hôtel de Rohan, Archives de France, 1961, no. 537). Another portrait of Michelet painted by Couture is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris in the Petit Palais (inv. PDUT1734).
